As Ffionnys has noted, "Lizards" is not the best word to call a race on a technomagic planet. It doesn't sound right.
So let's come with ideas as to what to replace it with.
The "Pangolin" metioned before in jest isn't all to fitting either. Cause in truth it refers to a toothless mammal rolling into a ball at the slightest notion of danger...
In russian the word "Ящер" used for the name of the race that has been translated as "Lizard" by the devs actually means an extinct reptile... That was simply a translator's mistake...
Let us post our suggestions here about what kind of name you think would be more fitting for this race and why.
My suggestion: To refelect the meaning of the initial Russian word I'd suggest to use any derivative form of the waord "Saur" or "Saurus" since it refers more to the extinct reptiles... The multiple form could be "Sauri" for example...

Well, after a little research, I have come up with the following information and questions. Do we know or can we surmise that the "Lizards" are true reptilians? I haven't re-read the lore, but if they are true reptilians, then "Saur" in some form may not be appropriate as saurs were long-necked reptiles - think brontosaurs. Alternately, they could be part of this family: Squamata: lizards and snakesThis order forms the largest group of living reptiles, containing approximately 5,500 species of lizards and snakes. It also contains certain extinct forms called Pythonomorpha, that had snake-like bodies and lizard-like limbs. [source: MSN Encarta] This somewhat describes their looks IMHO. But Sqaumata doesn't roll off the toungue quite right. Lastly... TherapsidaThe members of this extinct order are commonly called “mammal-like reptiles” as they are ancestral to mammals. Just looked at the lore now, and arguably, the lizards do possess certain mammalian characteristics (feminine-shaped body in the female for example). So, considering all the options, I would put forth " Theraps" (sic) as my first choice and " Sauri" as a second choice, with " Squams" (sic) as a last choice. Thanks for listening! /rice /rice /rice /rice /rice

Saur or Saurians or somesuch certainly fits better, and I have seen it before somewhere or other in the same context. It's certainly an obvious alternative: ie Dinosaur. I quite like Theraps too, but maybe something invented rather than translated would be more fitting, after all Zwergs, Arrawns, etc aren't based on earth-oroginated names either. How about "zorai"? j/k

Actually, I would imagine them a little more like this (The Scarrans, from Farscape): But then I AM a Farscape addict ...

I like Theraps because that's the sound a long lizard tongue might make. Saurians to a lesser degree.
These lizards are supposed to be powerfully built, brutish but with a cunning mind, so is there a type of reptile like that?

Well, you could say that the Komodo dragons are like that... average lenght around 2-3 metres and weighing in at around 70kg... A quick google located numerous sites stating that their intelligence seems exceptional... And, BTW, that Scarran gives me the heebeejeebees!
